As our Foodie Baby series has come to an end, we will dive into this season of LOVE with Valentine’s Day just a few weeks away. If you’ve been following my blog over the last few weeks, you now know that my baby K has a LOVE for food and just loves her peas (especially frozen)! Today’s post will be about one of K’s LOVES…green peas!
I did a little research on these little guys and learned there are different types of peas including Garden or Green Peas, Snow Peas and Snap Peas. Garden/Green Peas are the ones pictured. They are in the legume family and have great antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits, regulate blood sugar, promote a healthy heart and protect against stomach cancer. You can find them raw at local farmers markets and some markets typically between December and April, as they are winter crops. You can also find them frozen year round in your market’s frozen section. If you buy them raw, be sure to handpick the ones that have a velvety texture and have a nice color to them (not too light, too dark, yellow, brown, spotted, etc.). Be sure to cook them before serving. If you want to store them for up to 6 months, flash freeze the peas by blanching them for 1-2 minutes and then freezing them immediately. If you purchase frozen peas, they are already blanched so you can serve them frozen or steam/cook them for a few minutes if you prefer. That’s how we get our peas…frozen, just the way K likes em’! We always have a bag or two of frozen peas in the freezer!
Why does K love peas so much? First, I think it’s the sweet flavor from the natural sugars in them. Second, she loves to pop a handful in her mouth knowing that they’re easy to chew and swallow. Third, she loves to sign the word “peas” and it was her first solid food she learned to sign. Fourth, this might be a long shot, but perhaps because she loves her Pixar’s Toy Story Peas in a Pod plush toy from Disney (pictured above). Or, maybe, just maybe, she loves her toy because loves peas so much?
Why does K love them frozen? Especially when K is teething, I think K gets relief from chewing on frozen peas. They must feel good against her gums, numbing them from any pain. She especially enjoys them to cool herself down as a special treat on a hot day!
Why do I love them? First, I love how K loves them and how healthy they are for baby. Second, they’re such an easy food to take on the go, especially when all I have to do is pour a cup of frozen peas into a container and…voilà!!! ! A perfect snack or side! Third, I love how they act as a teething ring/pain reliever for K’s swollen gums. And finally, peas are great finger foods for K to practice her small/fine-motor skills! Oh wait, there’s one more! If I ever need to buy some time when in a good conversation with a friend, standing in a long line at the market, etc., I can give K a 1/2 cup of peas and I am guaranteed at least another 5-10 minutes of baby K joyfully eating her peas in peace 🙂
